In-Office Listening: Toro Y Moi

by Indigenous on January 22, 2010

It’s day 5 of the great Los Angeles Rain-In (yeah, I’m capitalizing it y’all) and the idea of the ‘rainy-day iTunes playlist’ is wearing thin as we have gone from being stuck in the mood, rather than attempting to find music that fits said mood. Enter Columbia, South Carolina glo-waver, Chaz Bundick and his recent Carpark Records-signed project, Toro Y Moi. This 23-year old is good. Really good. I’m afraid we can’t take credit for discovering this gem – it came to us from the newest addition to the INDIGENOUS staff who’s music taste proves to perfectly compliment ours.

Starting in 2001 as a bedroom project, Bundick had to then focus on getting a Graphic Design degree under his belt. After completion at school, he decided to go after the band thing, though, I can pretty much assume he wasn’t going after trying to become one of the most buzzed-about new acts 2010 (and our office) has to offer. Sounding on the surface like fellow glo-fi, Southerner Washed Out, the music on his Crusers of This debut pop-and-fizzle like an under-the-bed Animal Collective buzzing alongside Daft Punk synths chopped by the crate-digging hands of beat-master Prefuse 73.

Check out standouts “Blessa” “Minors” and “Thanks Vision” off his Feburary 2ND, Carpark Records released debut LP, Cruisers of This.
