After two amazing years, The Rumble San Diego is coming to an end and we couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate the event, then with our San Diego Music Thing showcase on Saturday September 10th. We’ve gathered a bill of some our favorite bands and partnered with Bar Pink for an epic night.

Crystal Antlers will be making the trek from Los Angeles before they head to the UK. This Long Beach quintet dropped Two Way Mirror (Recreation LTD) earlier this summer and it’s full of enough psychy garage goodness, that it’s been on repeat around our offices.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Tim Presley’s (Darker My Love/ The Strange Boys) solo project, White Fence has bred some of our favorite Velvet Underground inspired albums of the year, with Is Growing Faith. Pure retro Woodist perfection and the undeniable jangle of “Get That Heart” is downright swoon worthy.

“Get That Heart” by White Fence by forcefieldpr

Steeped in Warhol induced psychedelia, Tropical Popsicle melds hazy 60s styled psych pop with tinges of 80s new wave on dreamy numbers like “The Age of Attraction.” The side project of SD local Tim Hines (The Stereotypes, Lights On), released their Beach With No Footprints 7″ (Volar Records) in June and are set to play CMJ in October.

Vice darlings by way of Puerto Rico, Davila 666 are gracing our show with fellow In The Red labelmates, Cheap Time before they embark on a Fall tour together. After a series of successful releases dating back to 2006, including the Pitchfork certified, Tan Bajo, full of fuzzed out Spanish garage rock tunes.

Hailing from Memphis, Cheap Time spent most of last year opening for the likes of Yo La Tengo and recording the aptly titled Fantastic Explanations (and Similar Situations), for a Jay Retard influenced garage pop worthy offering.

Our own and Aquarium Drunkard favorites, So Many Wizards are venturing down from LA for the night, bringing their buoyant dreamy bedroom pop to SD. This trio make a blissful whimsical gems like Inner City and Best Friends off their newest 7″ (Seven Inch Project).

Click here to view the embedded video.

Our resident DJ, Cory Casey will be spinning all night. SDMT wristbands will be honored. 21+ RSVP here.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to all of those partners, friends, and people who made The Rumble San Diego a reality over these last two years. Please show our partners, past and present some love and thanks for their contribution. Much love to Future Sounds, Bar Pink, SD Dialed In, Friends With Both Arms, Trumer Pils, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Eventbrite, M Theory, Veoba, Owl & Bear, Bedouin Vintage Collective and Sezio.

A cacophony of synths, pedals, drum machines and looped beats, the Oakland-based analog synth duo, James & Evander have been churning out future pop since 2005. Comprised of college friends, Adam Myatt and Glenn Jackson, their discography showcases an exploration of ambient Dntel influenced techno and woozy weed-wave.

Their arsenal of material ranges from their This Isn’t the Beginning of Anything LP (2009) and the Sun & Circuitry EP (2010) to the Songs We Wish We Wrote Series, a collection of remixes of artists, like Fleet Foxes, Man Miracle, Jon Brion and Nazcar Nation.

James & Evander just dropped the Constellating EP + 2, which is a departure for the duo, as it marks their first foray into the land of vocals. This five song EP is hybrid of the pair’s electro roots with emotive vocals layered over their signature subdued, lush synth pop that’s equal parts dreamy and alluring. Title track, “Constellating” is a Postal Service styled electro-pop opus, while “Slap Bracelets” is mix of driving drum beats and glimmering synths and “Really Real” is blissed out lesson in tender chillwave. The EP also features two remixes by fellow Bay Area artists, Ander and shortcircles.

Recommended If You Like: Dntel, Wild Nothing, Postal Service

Céleigh Chapman wrote the first stanzas of “Gone Gone” after speaking with her grandparents about failing crops and the continual fight for water in California. Together, Watters and Chapman applied this sense of helplessness and defiance to loss of faith, failing relationships, and dislocation in an attempt to write a song that felt like singing a Steinbeck Novel. The image accompanying “Gone Gone” is by photographer Brian Schirk. It depicts the interior of a dusty mausoleum in Baja California.

Gardens & Villa are the type of band that could have only came to be by the stars aligning just right to bring together five guys living under one roof on Villa St. in Santa Barbara, CA. Their music fuses elements of new wave, funk, folk, and pop combined with an aesthetic that crafts sultry feelings all around . They have already garnered attention by ears we trust like Yours Truly who proclaimed, “Gardens & Villa’s take on sexual synth-pop is harmless, drunken fun… It’s bombastic, yet blase funk that can set the mood for any house party hook-up.”

In the Summer of 2010, the band caught the ear of their visionary, Richard Swift, who recorded and produced their debut full length at his cabin in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Gardens & Villa have since released the “Black Hills/Orange Blossom” 7-inch via Cool Summer Recordings and these tracks have become staples for the past few months.

Gardens & Villa are Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop and Dustin Ineman. With instrumentation including flutes, percussion, synths and drums, the band’s live performance embodies a lustrous energy that evokes movement and lingers like a pleasant dream for days. LA residents, grab your flute pack and catch them at Silverlake Lounge in LA tonight with The New Division. Look for their full-length in July, 2011 on Secretly Canadian.

COYOL is a collision of the old Southwest and the new Los Angeles. A seemingly contradictory duo, COYOL is a beautiful juxtaposition between polished and poignant vocalist, Céleigh Champan, and unrefined, avant-garde artist, John Isaac Watters.

Chapman grew up singing country standards in the juke joints of Bakersfield, California. Her first performance was “Home On The Range” in the third grade; years later, after watching her at the Crystal Palace, Buck Owens gave his approval. Watters was born in Mexico City, raised in Tucson, and spent some of his childhood in Coyol, Veracruz. He is an artist, architect, and musician whose rare lyrical talents and fearless approach to songwriting feel both fresh and familiar.

The seed for COYOL was planted when Chapman, Watters, and keyboardist Will Gramling met in college and gathered with a group of like-minded musicians in the evenings to play old hymns and folk songs. This collective of musicians eventually disbanded into multiple projects and Watters and Chapman started writing songs together. They asked Texas native and long time friend Gramling to produce their self-titled debut EP and join them on keys…thus, COYOL was born.

In the summer of 2010, they recorded their first album, a self-titled EP on 2″ tape at the Carriage House in Silverlake, CA. COYOL will unveil each of the EP’s six tracks individually, culminating in the full release on September 6, 2011. Each song’s story unfolds uniquely and will be accompanied by imagery designed by various artist friends of the band.

Watters wrote the lyrics to “Pharmacist” while living in a converted artist loft in downtown LA’s Skid Row. It is an area of shocking paradox; people living in cardboard ‘homes’ under the shadow of massive bank buildings, men in suits stepping over the sleeping homeless on their way to work. “Pharmacist” is a snapshot into this world through the lens of Watters’ own insomnia and anxiety disorder, which he was suffering from at the time. This prompted lyrics like “Give me a pill to pop/I need a pharmacist/I need a surgeon for my mind / There’s all these images and video footage/stuck in rapid, rapid rewind.” Interestingly, Chapman’s father is a pharmacist in Bakersfield. The artwork accompanying “Pharmacist” is by Mariana Blanco and depicts two fractured, overlayed images discovered by the artist at estate sales. The video for ‘Pharmacist’ was shot on Chapman’s family farm in Bakersfield.

We’re back and glad to present the first (super-dreamy) installment of The Rumble San Diego with our friends at Future Sounds. This month featuring TV Girl, Dirty Gold, Letting Up Despite Great Faults and one of our favorite DJs, Cory Casey, spinning records between sets. Also something new this month, because so many of you love (to steal) our Rumble posters, designed by the talented Ivan Minsloff, we’ll be selling what’s left of 50 limited edition screen-printed posters by Strong Screen Printing at the show.

This month, headlining the night are TV Girl. Already “Forkcasted” by Pitchfork and receiving accolades in the blogsphere, TV Girl’s dancey dream-pop vibe is contagious. ”It You Want It” says it all. Download their entire self-titled EP for FREE at their Bandcamp page. 02-If-You-Want-It.mp3

Who better to compliment TV Girl, then San Diego’s Dirty Gold. These north county teenagers are making waves with their blissful song, “California Sunrise,” consistently charting in the top 50 on Hype Machine. Dirty Gold are surely on the radar of every A & R label rep right now, so catch em while you can.

Kicking off the night art LA’s Letting Up Despite Great Faults. With resemblance to Postal Service, “In Steps,” offers electro-pop that warms you up inside. A blog we love, I Guess I’m Floating, describes them as “like walking through the park on a sunny day in a sepia world.” Couldn’t have said it better.

The Rumble would not be possible without the help of our partners: BMI, M Theory, SDDIALEDIN, Owl & Bear, and Bedouin Vintage Collective, so please show them your love.

In the past, Writer have experimented with their sound and line up, teetering back and forth between indie-pop and lo-fi garage along with adding and taking away players in the band. However, it appears they’ve undoubtedly found their groove. Now stripped down and comprised of brothers, Andy and James Ralph, Writer shares the kind of cerebral chemistry that takes years for most bands to find. But don’t let the two piece fool you, their music is lush, layered, interesting and yes, they pull it off live. Check out their new energetic, lo-fi gem “Miss Mermaid.” Look for a 7″ soon.
